Soulful pop artist Adele is a worldwide inspiration for breaking music records and stigmas created within the industry. She is an admiration for her powerful voice and lyrics, her humility, her authenticity, and her ability to remain confident and true to who she is, regardless of the norms in society. Adele pursues singing because of her love for music and does not care for the fame and prestige associated to it. She is a pure non conformist and she has never been one to get too attached to success, but rather tackles it with patience and ease. Here are the 20 MOST inspiring facts from her unique upbringing, life events, career and from the adversities and challenges she has faced along the way.



1.) Adele’s childhood consisted of moving around a bunch, and apparently she went to over 10 different schools. She grew up mostly in Tottenham, where unemployment is very high and her and her single mother often lived in government-subsidized housing.



2.) Her mother was a very artistic woman. Her mother was only 18 when she had her and her father left the family when she was 2. He became a raging alcoholic.



3.) Apparently the first time she held a microphone, she felt it was her calling. Adele’s childhood inspirations were Lauren Hill, Mary J. Blige and the Spice Girls, whom she would impersonate at dinner parties.



4.) Her mother’s friends would sit on her bed getting mini concerts of a young Adele performing. Her mother would shine many lamps to make a spotlight for her daughter.



5.) Growing up, Adele absolutely loved to sing, play the guitar and the clarinet. She enjoyed singing more than reading and claims the last book she read was when she 6.



6.) Adele didn’t really have a big giant dream to be famous, rather she just really enjoyed creating great music and doing what she loved. Thankfully her mother did push her a bit to get her out there in the world.

At age 15, her world was shaken when she heard Etta James at a record store. “She was the first time a voice made me stop what I was doing and sit down and listen. It took over my mind and body.” She would then listen to Etta James every night for an hour and began discovering her own unique voice. Amy Winehouse’s album Frank was literally the reason she picked up a guitar and wrote songs.

8.) At age 14 she was accepted to a prestigious performing arts high school in London. The school helped nurture her talents; however she was more concerned with doing work as an A&R to help other artists’ careers.




9.) She was almost kicked out of the school several times over for being late. In fact, she once overslept and came 4 hours late.



10.) Her mother was always her best friend and a huge supporter of her talent. A friend posted her songs on Myspace. It took 2 years before some big labels emailed her, however she was very skeptical about them, until her mother urged her and she went on to get signed with XL.

She based the song “someone like you” on that relationship claiming it to help her therapeutically and allowing her to be set free.

In fact, in Brussels, she actually vomited on someone One time, she escaped through the exit door from her nervous spell. She claims to hate touring. Her cure? She likes to make jokes prior and get a good laugh to cool the nerves. However, she admits that she only gets over it once she gets off the stage.



13.) Adele does not care to conform to the stereotypical look. Her weight had always fluctuated a lot but she does not pay attention to it. She does not work out or diet and enjoys smoking, drinking wine and eating exquisite meals. “But that’s not what my music is about. I don’t make music for eyes, I make music for ears.” It’s never been an agenda for her “I’ve never seen magazine covers and seen music videos and been like, ‘I need to look like that if I want to be a success,'”.



14.) She has an alter ego similar to Beyoncé. In fact, she created her nickname “Sasha Carter” after Beyoncé’s alter ego Sasha Fierce. The idea came after meeting her and getting a panic attack. Beyoncé told her “You’re amazing! When I listen to you I feel like I’m listening to God”. This enabled an emotional Adele to think ‘What would Sasha Fierce do?’ and the alter ego was born.



15.) Adele believes in patience and perfection. Her song “Hello” was almost not produced. It took 6 months between writing the song and the chorus. The co-writer said he didn’t even know if she would ever finish it as she wanted it to sound perfect and she was also facing some personal issues. Time can heal things.

Her tracks are about true events in her life and her bassist, Sam Dixon has said that it can be challenging for her to sing the songs at times because of the personal factor. In fact, at the Brit Awards, she almost cried during her performance of “Someone like you” and had to turn away from the cameras.



20.) Adele had vocal chord microsurgery. Her first performance was at the 54th Grammy Awards when she blew the audience away and then won 6 awards.
