In this commencement speech at California Institute of Technology, Elon Musk shares his insight from when he was young and didn't know what he wanted to do with his life. He recalls that he finally realized that he wanted to invent things. Purpose is so important, and when he found his "why", things began to add up quickly. He remembers reading a quote about how - efficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. He touched on how all inventions were a form of magic, from being able to fly (planes),seeing over long distances (telescopes), communicating (phones), to a group mind where information can be easily accessed (internet). Elon Musk had found his purpose, which was, in his words that "if I can advance technology then that would be like magic." This led him study physics and business because he wanted to know how the universe and the economy worked. He claims he was always trying to figure it all out and what it all meant, and what was the purpose of things. He eventually came to the conclusion that if we, as a human species could advance knowledge and expand the scope of conciousness then we can ask the better questions and find enlightenment. He strongly believes that is the only way forward.
Musk talked about how America is a place for explorers. He discussed how the preservation and extension of conciousness is so important to sustaining life on this planet and how he wants to assure that. His company SpaceX is trying to figure out the impossible - how to bring people to Mars rapidly. He also tells a quick story of how they ran out of money when trying to send out their space crafts to Orbit and they were on their last funds on their 4th attempt, which thankfully worked.
"You guys are the magicians of the 21st century. Don't let anything hold you back, imagination is the limit. Go out there and create some magic."
