Jim Morrison: 12 Liberating Quotes

Poet, singer, song-writer and lead vocalist of The Doors, Jim Morrison, was a revolutionary artist of his time who influenced the 60's and generations after. It was his counter-culture and non-conforming presence that took the world by storm making him one of the most iconic rock stars ever!

He was a mysterious individual who was known as an intelligent kid. Morrison was heavily inspired by poets and philosophers, particularly Friedrich Nietzsche. He would go on to study film at UCLA where he earned his degree. Morrison was a poetic and artistic genius, plain and simple, even with his choosing of the band name The Doors, he said "there's the unknown and the known and in between you have the door's".

He was certainly admired for good reason - he was brilliant, poetic, a great performer and just pure talented as they come. In fact, he was able to improvise his poetry to rock beats and often believed and practiced that you need to destroy in order to create. Unfortunately, he had a very wild and dangerous side which led to his early death at just 27 from an overdose with heroin. No can deny, however, that Morrison captured a generation and left his mark with absolute creativity and pure self-expression. Here is a good look at his 12 quotes/lyrics that are truly illuminating and liberating at it's finest. Break on through to the other side...

1.) Probably the best definition of true friendship, ever! Morrison explains the human spirit at it's highest and best form:

"Friends can help each other. A true friend is someone who lets you have total freedom to be yourself - and especially to feel. Or, not feel. Whatever you happen to be feeling at the moment is fine with them. That's what real love amounts to - letting a person be what he really is."

2.) Freedom is peace, serenity and joy all that same time. Morrison knew the secret power to reach absolute freedom and limitless potential and that is through completely exposing fear...

"Expose yourself to your deepest fear; after that, fear has no power, and the fear of freedom shrinks and vanishes. You are free."

3.) Wisdom to it's finest, Jim Morrison was clearly from the hippie era of the 60's. He understood that society often unintentionally gives us a face that we were never meant to wear. Our truth lies under that mask, and Morrison loved to help reveal that inner being....powerful quote on every level!

"The most important kind of freedom is to be what you really are. You trade in your reality for a role. You give up your ability to feel, and in exchange, put on a mask."

4.) He had a very deep passion for poetry since a kid and he was inspired by many of the great poets including his favourite William Blake. It's cliché, but passion gives you purpose:

"Listen, real poetry doesn't say anything; it just ticks off the possibilities. Opens all doors. You can walk through any one that suits you."

5.) Yes, did we mention, Jim Morrison was at times, more of a revolutionary kind of musician.

"You're all a bunch of fuckin' slaves! How much longer are you gonna let them push you around?"

6.) Jim Morrison's catch phrase and nickname. It can be heard by Lisa Simpson in an episode of The Simpsons. Pure limitless mindset.

"I am the Lizard King. I can do anything."

7.) We'll let you be the judge of this one. Again, very enlightening...

“You feel your strength in the experience of pain.”

8.) Jim Morrison seemed to be part rocker part yogi at times. He was spiritually gifted in this sense, he was very deep and profound and knew some very scholarly truths.

"There can't be any large-scale revolution until there's a personal revolution, on an individual level. It's got to happen inside first.”

9.) As a complete non-conformist who did not have respect for societies rules which often limited flexibility, he encouraged people to get out of the regular mentalities and be shaken up.

"I like people who shake other people up and make them feel uncomfortable."

10.) A think-for- himself type individual, Morrison was obsessed with philosophy in his teens and this gave him the insight to understand the importance of true freedom.

"If my poetry aims to achieve anything, it's to deliver people from the limited ways in which they see and feel."

11.) Morrison absolutely expressed his inner realm, this is what contributed to him being such a natural genius. From the outside in, it looked as if his talent was incomparable. However, these lyrics give us good indication that he was digging deep within his intuition and instincts which made him remarkably gifted. Point being, he was flowing with his natural soul.

"Where's your will to be weird?"

12.) Break free from all the limitations that are stopping you from truly being your own natural self and just be free and open to new ideas and to just let your imagination, along with your subconscious, take over. From the song "break on through to the other side", Morrison dives in to tell you to LET GO of the approval from others and live the life you want!

"Break on through to the other side".
