Born: July 10, 1972, Colombia | Successful For: Actress, model | Zodiac Sign: Cancer
Inner Keys to Success:
- BE AUTHENTIC AND REAL WITH WHO YOU ARE: Always true to who she is, Sofia Vergara remains a true definition and representation of herself wherever she goes. She has come a long way from when she openly admitted that as a young girl, she was so self-conscious of her thin body that she would wear two pairs of jeans to look more full framed (since that is the stereotypical look in South America). Today, she is as comfortable as ever, she is known to be hilarious and constantly laughing and enjoying herself. She does not care to be like everyone else, and in a Hollywood that constantly discusses fitness, she openly states that she hates working out. She boldly states “Listen, I’m not afraid of anything, I’m Colombian”. Even though it’s customary to bring a date to the Emmy’s, Sofia brought 21 of her family members to attend in 2013. Her realism has led to a huge fan base which has resulted in her being the highest-earning woman in American television in which she earned $19 million in one year. Sofia Vergara initially took accent classes in L.A and claimed she tried too hard to sound western until she finally realized it was better to just be herself. On this subject, she said “And then one day I said, you know what? That’s it. If I can’t get a job with my accent, then this is not a job for me.” Sofia Vergara has a positive vibe that’s natural to her, it’s not forced, she lets herself be, so to speak. She has not had an ounce of plastic work done on her, she is all natural. With honesty, she claims “Maybe when I’m 45, I’ll think about it” .
- TAKE A LEAP OF FAITH WHEN OPPORTUNITIES ARISE: When a photographer discovered Sofia Vergara while taking a stroll on a Colombian beach, he presented her with an offer to model. When these opportunities for show business arose, she decided to pursue them right away, leaving her undergraduate studies for dentistry behind, two semesters shy of receiving her degree. At just 20, Vergara moved to the capital of Colombia where she worked as a runway model and television actress. She then co-hosted a travel series in which she visited exotic places around the world. It was telecast on the international Spanish-language television network and instantly made her a star in the Latin market. It also gave Sofia Vergara a lot of television exposure in the US. Soon after, she moved to Miami to take full advantage of her rising career and left her rougher home country of Colombia behind. And then she took another leap of faith when she joined forces with Luis Balaguer, her manager, to create a Latino Media company called Latin World Entertainment in 1996 which is now a powerhouse empire and in 2011 was making revenues of approximately 27 million.“You know, I was the class clown in Catholic school, but I never thought I would make a living out of it.”
- HAVE A STRONG THRESHOLD TO NOT GET KNOCKED DOWN, NO MATTER WHAT: She was married at 18 and divorced shortly after. She had a child with her first husband but rather than get down on life, she began studying pre-dentistry at a Colombian university for 3 years. Her attitude “I’m fearless, I don’t complain. Even when horrible things happen to me, I go on.” Sofia Vergara’s older brother was even killed in a kidnapping attempt in 98 and decided to bring her son, mother and sister with her to live in the US. She was diagnosed with thyroid cancer in 2000, she remained positive, got it removed, underwent radiation therapy and made a recovery. However, she takes medication on a day to day basis and keeps a light approach on it all. “When they tell you that you have cancer, you panic. Now I’m in remission, and the scar doesn’t bother me. After the surgery in 2003, I had my son Photoshop a Frankenstein scar on my neck and sent it to my friends and said, ‘I’m fine, I look perfect!’ It was really funny.”
“So I am taking advantage while I can, to make money like I can now, because why not? It’s part of my job, doing what I like.”
– Sofia Vergara
She was estimated at making $19 million in 2011, which is not too shabby for the daughter of a housewife and a cattle farmer. She signed endorsement deals with the likes of Burger King, Diet Pepsi and Covergirl in English and Spanish that amount to a whopping $12 million. Kmart has backed her clothing line with a total $7 million. All this money and success, and Sofia Vergara remains a true gem, contributing to an array of charities like American Foundation for Equal Rights and Stand Up To Cancer. Even when she began her first TV ad for Pepsi at 17, she made sure it aligned with her beliefs and approached her Catholic schoolteachers who gave her the personal permission. She is a huge inspiration to the entire Latino population as she paved a way.
“I can turn around and scream and get angry, but I turn around and I forget about it.”
– Sofia Vergara
