A David Hume Quote About The Attainment Of Happiness

“The great end of all human industry is the attainment of happiness. For this were arts invented, sciences cultivated, laws ordained, and societies modeled, by the most profound wisdom of patriots and legislators. Even the lonely savage, who lies exposed to the inclemency of the elements and the fury of wild beasts, forgets not, for a moment, this grand object of his being.” – David Hume

Empiricism, skepticism, and naturalism, these were the tools of the Scottish Philosopher, David Hume. The radical philosophical nature of his work as a historian, essayist, and economist, has garnered him much attention over the years, even with his long ago passing in the year 1776…

How is it the elusive search for happiness continues to escape the vast majority of humanity? It appears to me this search was important enough to capture a quote that is at least 240 years old. What lengths have we gone to as a society to “create” happiness? Can we really do anything effective to create happiness? What is it about the Arts and Sciences that brings happiness? Is it entertainment and understanding?

And what of our laws and societies? Is it the rules and the structure that allows the attainment of happiness? What profound wisdom of both patriots and legislators would establish a platform from which happiness might be derived? It appears, at least at first glance, even the lonely savage, exposed to both elements and beasts, forgets not, the quest for happiness…

But what of modern man? Are we any closer after all these years to discovering and understanding what really leads to happiness? What if happiness had nothing to do with any of these things? What if happiness was simply a decision? What if happiness was simply the way? Dr. Wayne Dyer explored this area extensively and came up with the following conclusion: “There is no way to Happiness, HAPPINESS is the WAY!”
