An Aldous Huxley Quote About How To Gain True Education

“The most valuable of all education is the ability to make yourself do the thing you have to do, when it has to be done, whether you like it or not.” – Aldous Huxley

This quote is powerful because it speaks to both education and self-discipline. The education being discussed here is not formal education, but self-education. In a highly demanding, fast paced, now-focused world, we have to choose on what and where, to focus our efforts and energy.

In any given day, there are only a finite number of minutes available to each of us for the accomplishment of our desires and responsibilities. How then do we ensure we get done all that needs to be done in a day? Decide! Just decide that you will do that which needs to be done, when it needs to be done, period! No excuses!

And, more importantly, create a compelling why. When we decide why, and when the why is absolutely compelling, we are much more likely to take action, stay focused, and actually accomplish what we set out to achieve.

One of the most effective strategies for accomplishing “tasks” we would rather avoid, is the “Sandwich” technique. This is where we get to be creative based on what we know about ourselves. The idea is to do something we enjoy first. This way, we get our energy up before we take on the “thing we have to do.”

Then, we can shift into the doing of the work and focus on the task at hand for a pre-determined period of time. 50 minutes is optimal as it gives us a 10 minute buffer to “Finish Strong.”  Now, we “Reinforce” our efforts by doing an aspect of our work we enjoy as a “Reward” for our discipline! (You can learn all about finishing strong from author Dan Green).

Eventually, with repeated effort, we will develop a disciplined productivity habit that has us getting more done than we ever thought possible! And, we will develop a deep sense of satisfaction as we gobble up our work, one “Sandwich” at a time!
