“It’s just better to be yourself than to try to be some version of what you think the other person wants.”
– Matt Damon
Inner Keys to Success:
- SURROUND YOURSELF WITH LIKE-MINDED GO-GETTERS: Matt Damon had a true friend who supported, lifted and encouraged him to pursue his passion. Ben and Matt would remain friends from childhood neighbors to Hollywood stars and they helped one another succeed, always raising the bar to set the tone. It’s always great to surround yourself with people who are enthusiastic about your success and who share a similar dream. Good Will Hunting was written by Damon and Affleck, when they couldn’t land any jobs as fledging actors, they decided to take a school project one-act play which Damon ended up writing a 40-page partial movie script instead. When he moved to L.A., he asked Ben Affleck to help him make it into something bigger. The rest is history.
- GIVE, GIVE, GIVE, AND YOU WILL RECEIVE: Damon has always had great ethics and he loves to give back. Stemming from his single mother who was known to be extremely supportive and a key role in his success. She was a teacher who raised him “by the book”, which taught him great values. This mentality escalated since the age of just 12, deciding what to do with his $5 allowance. He is now a profound philanthropist who has helped in so many charities including his own H20 Africa Foundation. Damon is a grounded individual who understands the importance of giving back. He has been actively involved in a lot of charitable work, including water.org and the ONE campaign just to name a few. A prolific humanitarian, Matt Damon is heavily involved in an organization that stops junk mail from being delivered to your mailbox, which, in turn, saves hundreds of trees.
- BE RELENTLESS AND DO WHATEVER IT TAKES TO MAKE YOUR DREAM A REALITY: Boston’s own Matt Damon would break dance in the middle of Harvard Square for money as a teenager, he attended Harvard University where he would find himself skipping classes for acting projects and dropped out 12 credits short of graduating and moved to LA to pursue his career. He literally cut off all ends of retreat, as it was clear that acting was his true desire (young Damon loved comics and had a knack for acting, would often role play as a child.)To perfect a Southern accent for his role in “The Rainmaker,” Damon worked as a bartender in Tennessee and even hired a customer to be his “dialect coach.” He learned to play piano for the film “The Talented Mr. Ripley” and lost 40 lbs for Courage Under Fire by eating only egg whites and chicken.”Some people get into this business and they’re so afraid to lose anything. They try to protect their position like clinging to a beachhead. These actors end up making really safe choices. I never wanted to go that route. If I go down, I’m going down swinging.”
“Eventually stardom is going to go away from me. It goes away from everybody and all you have in the end is to be able to look back and like the choices you made.” – Matt Damon
Little Known Success Fact:
According to the Boston Magazine, when Robin Williams read the script, he said, “This is really extraordinary.” He was so interested in them, he asked where the inspiration came from and found out it was based on their parents. Damon said “When Gus called action and we watched these guys — I mean accomplished actors — do our scene verbatim, we had waited so long for this to happen. I remember just sitting next to Ben and I had tears rolling down my cheeks because I was just so happy and relieved that it was really happening.”
“It’s better to be a fake somebody than a real nobody.”
