“To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded.” -Ralph Waldo Emerson on True Life Success
Let’s look at life through the words of Emerson on one of the most overly used and subjective words in the english dictionary, success . There is so much information in this quote. If we simply focus on the elements of finding the best in others and leaving the world a bit better, we will certainly be on the road to true success as defined by Emerson.
How do you put a value on knowing that even one life has breathed a little easier because we have simply truly lived? If we choose to focus on a social condition and commit to making that condition better, we become a success for having simply made the commitment.
Whatever we do, no matter how small, to have made a difference, is to have succeeded! When we look to others, what do we see? Are we standing in judgement, or do we see the potential of all that is the unique gift of the individual we are looking at or speaking with? Reserve judgement and seek to find the best in others and that is exactly what you will discover.
To really succeed, offer encouragement, give praise, or provide guidance. This is success of the highest caliber and is the lasting success we are all striving for. Be a difference maker and experience the success of knowing that what you did really mattered!
Every day we have an opportunity to make a real difference in the world with just our presence alone. When we show up, when we make a conscious decision to really show up, we get to decide who, how, and what we will BE, to make our own small unique contribution to humanity today.
Unfortunately, throughout history, we have been forced to deal with the acts of cowardice and compassion-less people. This may never change… However, we can change the way we respond and ensure we don’t ever let the acts of a few, determine the outcome of the many. Human beings are incredibly resilient and capable of the most remarkable things. Let’s focus on our ability to be magnificent, and maybe, just maybe, our magnificence will overcome the evil of the limited few.
